Ethereum's Technology, Beyond the Narrative

What a smart-contract platform actually does differently from a payments-focused chain, and why that distinction matters for how you evaluate it.

Where Bitcoin's protocol is intentionally narrow -- optimized for being a secure, predictable store and transfer of value -- Ethereum was designed as a general-purpose computing platform. Its blockchain doesn't just record balances; it executes code (smart contracts) whose results are enforced by the same distributed consensus that secures the ledger itself.

This generality is the basis for the broader ecosystem built on Ethereum: decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, and countless other applications that run as code deployed directly on the chain, without a central operator able to unilaterally change their rules once deployed. It is also the source of Ethereum's greater complexity, and complexity is not free -- more moving parts generally means a larger attack surface and more that can go wrong.

Evaluating Ethereum, or any smart-contract platform, benefits from separating two different questions that are often blurred together: is the underlying technology being genuinely used (developer activity, deployed applications, real transaction volume), and is the asset's price reflecting that usage accurately at any given moment. These can and do diverge, sometimes for extended periods in either direction.
